COVID-19 in Thar Desert, India

GRAVIS USA is working for COVID-19 relief within the Thar Desert region of India.

The situation, as we know, is getting very serious in India. The Districts in the Thar Desert alone are reporting 6,000 to 8,000 cases per day (nationally over 250,000 cases per day, and nearly 4,000 deaths everyday). The mortality rate is over 1%.  Very small numbers of people in rural areas have been vaccinated.

There is a lockdown in Rajasthan and all income-generating options are shut, and it is unlikely that they will re-open soon.  Essential supplies are available within limited hours of a day and will dry out in remote markets.  Farming season (due to start in July) looks bleak unless situation is controlled.

It is very likely that poor people in remote villages will be left out again.

We would like to address about 200,000 households in the Thar Desert, where we operate (out of the total estimated 2.5 million households in Thar), supporting as many households as possible with the resources available/raised.

What will be the best aid?

Food supplies kit – each costing $ 15 with dry ration lasting for a month for a family of 7

Home isolation kits – each is $30, for patients – with pulse oximeter, thermometer, basic medicines and masks

PPE kits – each is $ 8, for frontline health workers
